Remembering Alessandro De Stefano

Professor Alessandro De Stefano passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at his home in Asti near Turin, Italy.

It is with heavy hearts that ISHMII announces the passing of Alessandro De Stefano.

Professor De Stefano, born in 1945, got his master degree in Civil Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino, where he started his academic carrier at the Department of Structural Engineering, Construction and Soil Mechanics (DISEG) and become Full Professor of Earthquake Engineering and Research Group Coordinator. After his retirement in 2015 he was a partner in a start-up company (IN-SENSUS, Turin, Italy) producing innovative wireless sensors and sensor systems.

Professor De Stefano has served for ISHMII as a council member from the founding of the society to 2019. He organized SHMII-7 in Torino in 2015 with great success. He also has actively participated in the activities of the ISHMII committees such as the committee on ISHMII standardization.  Professor De Stefano’s legacy was honoured many times within the Society. In 2020, he was appointed as an Emeritus Council Member, in recognition of his years of service to the Society.

ISHMII extends our condolences to the De Stefano family and to all who had the pleasure of calling Alessandro a colleague, mentor, peer, and friend.
