The new wind tunnel testing laboratory at Shimizu Institute of Technology is the world’s first base-isolated building that floats on water (gross floor area : 1,253m2). The advantage of such structure is to enable to reduce the diameter of the laminated rubber bearing by utilizing the buoyant force of water and to bring out the effectiveness of isolation even on a soft soil. We attached the maximum strain memory sensors to the concrete columns of this building to detect the damage and estimate the soundness of the building after a severe earthquake.
