Webinar of 27 February 2026

On 27 February (9:30 AM CET), Prof. Yuguang Fu hosted a webinar on advancements in structural health monitoring of bridges, which attracted 62 participants. We were honored to welcome Prof. Steffen Marx from TU Dresden and Prof. Yong Xia from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as our distinguished speakers. Prof. Marx delivered a talk titled “From Structural Health Monitoring to Digital Twins: Bridge Case Studies from Germany.” He discussed the current challenges in bridge maintenance in Germany and introduced a BIM-based, SHM-informed digital twin framework through two practical case studies: the Nibelungen Bridge in Worms and the Köhlbrand Bridge in Hamburg. His presentation illustrated how integrated monitoring and digital modeling can support condition assessment and long-term management of ageing bridge infrastructure. Prof. Xia presented “Temperature Behavior of Bridges — Field Monitoring, Numerical Simulation, and Theoretical Analysis.” His talk provided a comprehensive discussion on the temperature behavior of four bridge types, beam bridges, arch bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and suspension bridges, examined through field monitoring data, numerical simulations, and analytical formulations. The presentations sparked a lively panel discussion, where participants explored how advanced sensing technologies, data-driven analytics, and digital twin frameworks are transforming bridge monitoring and enabling more resilient and efficient infrastructure maintenance.
