SHMII-13 conference successfully held in Graz

The SHMII-13 conference took place at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), Austria in September 2025. More than than 300 participants from 38 countries discussed the latest developments and current trends in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. 200 contributions were presented in 34 technical sessions and the entire open access proceedings are available at the Verlag of TU Graz at https://doi.org/10.3217/978-3-99161-057-1

Prof. Sylvia Kessler and Prof. Christian Sodeikat gave inspiring keynote speeches on the current challenges of bridge monitoring and data handling. Prof. Maria Pina Limongelli, Dr. Christoph Monsberger, Prof. Brank Glisic and Prof. Paolo Mazzanti focused in their keynotes on bridge and tunnel monitoring, the history and future of strain sensing and the possibilities of remote sensing techniques.

Day 2 continued with the gala dinner at the scenic Schlossberg. More than 100 m above the historic UNESCO world heritage city center, the evening began with a stunning sunset over the mountain ridge. We congratulate the winners of the best papers of the SHMII-13 conference and of the last years of the JCSHM journal of Springer, who received their awards at the award ceremony.

On the last day of the conference, the participants had the chance to see SHM live at the:

Subway construction in Vienna: Participants could see the shield of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in its assembly state and segmental as well as shotcrete tunnels linings.
Tunnel research center Zentrum am Berg: At ZaB a wide range of data capturing and visualization systems were on display. These included 3D lasers scanners, virtual reality (VR), distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) and much more. At the end of the tour the participants experienced a ride through the open pit mine in an old mining trip.
The laboratories of TU Graz: In the measurement lab of the Institute of Engineering Geodesy and Measurement Systems (IGMS) DFOS calibration facilities were in action. At the hydraulic engineering lab, large scale hydraulic power plant models were in operation and at the Institute of Technology and Testing of Building Materials participants gained insights into wireless sensors.
