Obituary of Dr. Fujino for SCSHM

Prof. Yozo Fujino, Fellow of SCSHM, passed away on June 6, 2026. He served for more than 30 years at the University of Tokyo, later became Distinguished Professor at Yokohama National University, and President of Josai University.

His major professional achievements include pioneering researches on dynamic behavior of long-span bridges under wind and earthquake actions, structural vibration control, and structural health monitoring (SHM).

Beyond his outstanding academic contributions internationally, Prof. Fujino was a visionary leader who recognized the significance of sensing technologies in ensuring the safety, resilience, and sustainable operation of civil infrastructure. Through his leadership in the major Japan national program, such as the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), he promoted interdisciplinary collaborations among academic, government, and industries, and contributed significantly to the implementation of sensing and monitoring technologies in real-world structures.

His recognition include Japan’s Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2007, the Hoko Award in 2015, the Japan Academy Prize in 2019, ASCE’s Raymond C.Reese Research Prize, R. H. Scanlan Medal, and George Winter Medal. In December 2025, he was elected as a Member of the Japan Academy.
