Purpose of the Committee

To promote and advance the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) internationally among young scholars and professionals and to engage them at an early stage of their careers. In time, this engagement will help accelerate the acceptance of SHM and enable SHM-based solutions to be an integral part of new and existing civil engineering infrastructure.

To create an exciting, interactive, informative, and easily accessible forum for young scholars and professionals to present, discuss, and get feedback and advice on the development and/or application of SHM technologies in their research or professional projects.

To create a platform for young scholars and professionals from different disciplines to share knowledge and experience and exchange ideas in order to maximize the impact of their research and/or development.

Objectives of the Committee

Actively facilitate the advancement of the state of art and the state of practice in the SHM field systems in civil engineering infrastructure by engaging young scholars and professionals at an early stage of their careers.

Highlight the work done by young scholars and professionals by promoting presentations, publications and panel sessions on selected topics in related areas, especially at biannual ISHMII conferences.

Serve as a focal point in ISHMII for young scholars and professionals within the engineering community at large. The use of social media and other related online outlets will be a major part of this effort.

In order to encourage and promote a multi-disciplinary culture, the committee will develop liaisons with other professional societies, and with corresponding committees of other national and international engineering and scientific societies.

Maintain and support ISHMII recognition of the contributions from young scholars and professionals working in the subject areas.

Committees

An ECR division will be founded in every region, including America, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and within industry. Each ECR division will be composed of one chair and between zero and two co-chairs, and the division chairs will automatically become the executive committee of the ECR committee. The executive committee will convey the message in different divisions and make decisions for these affairs, and vote if necessary.

Work Plan for 2019

Build the ECR Committee with about 200 Members, no later than May 1, 2020

Establish an “ISHMII-ECR Achievement Award” for ECR Committee Members, no later than August 1, 2020

Organize a special issue of the Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, no later than October 1, 2020

Set up an actual full-scale bridge benchmark for SHM researchers, no later than December 1, 2020
